Bottle in the form of a shoe
Leather and brass, length 30 cm, anonymous (Dutch), c. 1675–c. 1700
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

Shaped as a fantastical whale-like shoe, this piece is believed to have functioned as a shoemaker’s guild test and was used as a drinking horn by the guild's members. Made of stitched leather, its exaggerated form features a curved body, a square high heel, a gaping mouth with prominent teeth, and a detachable tail stopper with cork, combining humour with craftsmanship.
