Fruit cake
Cake of dates, raisins, 15 cm length, Egypt, c. 1492–1473 BC
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

This fruit cake, or type of pudding, dates to the New Kingdom at the dawn of the 18th Dynasty, spanning the reign of Thutmose II into the early joint rule. It was discovered in the tomb of Hatnefer, an Egyptian woman from a high‑status family. The cake was placed in an oval basket amongst offerings intended to sustain her spirit and those of her relatives. Alongside it were loaves of bread, raisins, and dates; with time, the cake itself has blackened and crumbled.
