Christmas Dream
Lithograph by Herr Berger, after a painting by Ine Probst, published 1922

From a series of works by pupils of Professor Cizek of the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, these reflect the aesthetic of Austrian folk art. The works are characterised by bold, flat designs and a repeated use of themes such as rural Tyrolean life, festive traditions, and simple religious imagery. Christmas Dream depicts a child resting peacefully, surrounded by a gathering of festive toys and decorations, as the spirit of Christmas envelops the scene. Delicate elements—dolls, animals, and miniature houses—bring to life a world of wonder, where innocence and holiday joy reign. With vivid colours and intricate design, the composition captures the essence of the season, radiating warmth, magic, and the closeness of family.
