| The Victor Emmanuel II Monument in Rome, also called the Altare della Patria, honours Italy’s first king after unification. It was designed by Giuseppe Sacconi and built between 1885 and 1911. The grand white marble façade features statues, columns, and an imposing equestrian statue of Victor Emmanuel II. It also houses the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, symbolising Italy’s fallen soldiers. During Mussolini’s rule, the monument’s central location made it a prominent backdrop for Fascist rallies, speeches, and propaganda linking his regime to Italian unification. Its scale and ornate design reflect the ambitions of the newly unified Italian state. The monument’s terraces and staircases create a dramatic approach, emphasising its grandeur and symbolic importance. |
