Detail of the Cloister of the Vows in Florence’s Basilica della Santissima Annunziata
Photograph by C. Cangiardi, 1995

A cloister wall in Florence’s Santissima Annunziata with a trompe-l'œil fresco of a Servite friar reading from a book, his gaze peering out through an illusory window. This painted niche is located in the Cloister of the Vows, designed by Michelozzo, where Renaissance artists such as Andrea del Sarto, Andrea di Cosimo and Pontormo adorned the walls with frescoes, medallions, heraldic symbols, and other decorations.
