The Great Gatehouse at Hampton Court Palace, shown in this image
following the restoration work of the late 1830s, underwent
significant preservation efforts led by architect Sir James Wyatt.
The restoration focused on stabilising the structure and enhancing
its appearance, addressing the damage caused by age and weathering.
Originally built in the early 16th century by Cardinal Wolsey, the
Gatehouse features Tudor architectural elements, including
brickwork, large windows, and decorative stone details, reflecting
the significance of Hampton Court as a royal residence. The 1830s
restoration sought to maintain the historical integrity of the
Gatehouse while incorporating modern techniques of the time. The
work involved repairing the brickwork, renewing the stone carvings,
and restoring the windows to their original designs.
