Designed by
Italian-Uruguayan architect Giovanni Veltroni and completed in 1938,
the Casa Central del Banco República represents an important example
of neoclassical institutional architecture in Uruguay. Located on
Avenida 18 de Julio in Montevideo, the building conveys stability
and formality through its symmetrical layout, imposing Corinthian
columns, and carefully detailed stone façade. Constructed with
granite and marble, it incorporates classical elements such as
pilasters, entablatures, and sculptural reliefs that reinforce its
monumental character. The interior includes expansive banking halls,
coffered ceilings, marble floors, and wrought iron fixtures,
reflecting the grand scale associated with early 20th-century public
architecture. As the main headquarters of the Banco de la República
Oriental del Uruguay, it has long stood as a physical expression of
the country’s financial and civic institutions. In 1975, it was
officially declared a National Historic Monument in recognition of
			its architectural and historical significance.
