Native to the mature evergreen forests of southern and eastern South Africa and Eswatii, the Knysna Turaco is one of the only birds in the world to possess true red and green pigments in its feathers, called turacin and turacoverdin, which are copper-based compounds. This bird also has a unique defence mechanism where it flashes its bright crimson primary flight feathers in the air to distract a predator, then folds its wings to make the red disappear when it lands, hoping to escape unseen.
