Native to Central and South America, the king vulture takes its name from its commanding appearance and behaviour, as its vivid colours, imposing size, and habit of displacing other vultures at carcasses create an impression of dominance. Other vultures often wait nearby until it arrives, since its powerful, hooked beak can tear open tough hides they struggle to breach. |
