Golden-bellied
hummingbirds (Coeligena eos)
Coloured engraving, anonymous, 1820-60
Golden-bellied Hummingbirds are primarily found in a limited range in
the Caribbean, specifically in Puerto Rico. Their striking golden belly
is a key feature that distinguishes them from other hummingbird species.
This golden colouration is especially prominent in males, who use it
in courtship displays to attract mates. Interestingly, the golden hues
come from microscopic platelets in their feathers that refract light,
creating an iridescent effect that can change depending on the angle
of the sunlight. This vibrant colour helps them stand out among the
greenery and flowers of their tropical environment.
