Portrait of a Flamingo

Found in parts of Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas, flamingos are wading birds that feed on algae, small crustaceans, and other aquatic organisms. Their distinctive pink colour comes from carotenoid pigments in their diet, particularly those found in algae and shrimp; without these foods, flamingos would be pale pink or even white. They are also well known for standing on one leg for long periods, a behaviour thought to help conserve body heat and reduce muscle fatigue.
