Abdim’s Stork
Image by Natacha de Hepcée, 2024

Known for its black and white plumage and grey and red legs, Abdim’s stork, also known as the white‑bellied stork, is a slender, migratory bird native mainly to eastern and southern Africa. It feeds mainly on insects and small vertebrates, often foraging in open grasslands and agricultural fields. In parts of Africa, people traditionally see the arrival of Abdim’s storks as a sign that the rainy season is starting, and they are sometimes called ‘rain birds’ because of this belief. The species is named after Abd al‑Rahman al‑Abdim (Bey El‑Arnaut Abdim), an Ottoman governor and naturalist.
