| Félix Vallotton (1865–1925) | ||||||||||
| A Swiss painter and printmaker, Vallotton was known principally for his nudes and interiors and was a pioneer in woodcut. Born in Lausanne, he studied graphic arts in Paris. After receiving much acclaim for his woodcuts, he took up painting and was associated with the Symbolist movement known as the Nabis, although he never formally aligned himself with the group. Inspired by his printmaking, Vallotton developed a stark, expressionist realism that he carried into his oil paintings. From the 1910s onward, he exhibited regularly, but in the final decade of his career, his work began to fall out of favour. His prolific output includes over 1,700 paintings and around 200 prints. Vallotton died in Paris. | ||||||||||
