Ducks Watercolour and pencil on card, 3 x 8 cm, by James Simpson Alderson (1856–1948) Private collection |

| Three white ducks lie nestled in a bed of straw in a row, their bodies partially tucked into the coarse, golden-brown bedding. Their plumage is soft and downy, tinged faintly with greys and blues in shadow, and their yellowish bills are short and slightly curved. Two face slightly right, one looks directly forward, and another glances to the left, creating a gentle rhythm across the composition. Simpson had an interest in rural subjects, and his depictions are unshowy, precise, and quietly observant—focused on the matter-of-fact stillness of farm life rather than any romantic flourish. |
