Ares Borghese (restored replica)
The Ares Borghese is thought to
be based on the lost bronze statute attributed to the Athenian
sculptor Alcamenes (end of the 5th century BC). According to
Pausanias, Alcamenes' statue was erected on the Agora of Athens, The
Ares Borghese is most likely a Roman replica, and the version in the
Louvre (formally part of the Villa Borghese collection) is
considered the most faithful version and is the best preserved. It
has given its name to the whole group of similar statues which
number at least twenty-one. Louvre version: marble, 2.11 metres
tall.
