A scene from The Rescue, a 1929 romantic adventure film starring
Lili Damita and Ronald Colman, based on Joseph Conrad’s novel.
Set in the Malay Archipelago, it follows British sailor Captain Tom
Lingard (Colman), who aids a stranded European couple, Edith Travers
(Damita) and her husband, an arrogant and weak-willed man. Lingard,
who has long sought to control local trade routes, becomes entangled
in a political conflict between indigenous factions. As he tries to
navigate these tensions, he falls in love with Edith, creating a moral
and emotional dilemma. His loyalty to the local people, his ambitions,
and his growing feelings for Edith push him towards a tragic reckoning.
Directed by Herbert Brenon, the film blended adventure and romance,
but as an early sound production, it faced technical limitations.
While praised for its performances, it is now largely forgotten, with
only an incomplete copy known to survive.
