Arms of the Medici Family of Florence
Or, six balls in orles, gules. Later: or, five balls in orle gules, in chief another azure, three fleurs-de-lys.

The fleurs-de-lys, the royal arms of France, were granted as an augmentation in 1465 by Louis XII of France. The number of balls has varied over time, as has their arrangement. There were originally eleven of them, then nine, then Cosimo I de' Medici changed them to eight, then Piero de' Medici changed them to seven, and Lorenzo the Magnificent finally changed them to six.
