General
development of jazz
Jazz arose in the late 19th and early 20th centuries amongst
African American communities in New Orleans. Its roots lie
in the merging of musical styles including blues, known
for its focus on storytelling and improvisation, and ragtime,
characterised by its syncopated rhythms and virtuosic piano
playing. Early jazz, often termed New Orleans jazz or Dixieland,
featured collective improvisation, where musicians played
off each other's melodies and rhythms, and a reliance on
brass instruments such as trumpets, cornets, and trombones.
As Jazz migrated northwards along the Mississippi River
to cities like Chicago and St Louis, it developed into a
more intricate and structured form. This era, known as the
Swing Era, witnessed the rise of big bands, large ensembles
featuring sections of saxophones, trumpets, and trombones,
all playing tightly arranged pieces with a strong emphasis
on rhythm. From the 1940s onwards, jazz continued to diversify.
Bebop, characterised by faster tempos, complex harmonies,
and a focus on individual virtuosity, emerged. Cool jazz,
a more introspective style, arose in reaction to bebop.
Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, jazz continued
to fragment into subgenres like free jazz, which emphasised
complete improvisational freedom, and jazz fusion, which
blended jazz with elements of rock and roll and other genres.
Jazz's influence can be felt across popular music, impacting
rhythm and blues, rock and roll, and even pop music. Its
legacy lies in its emphasis on improvisation, innovation,
and the ability of musicians to create a unique and ever-evolving
art form.
