| Lorenzo Metalli (1807–1847) | ||||||||||
| An Italian draughtsman, lithographer, and engraver, Metalli was known for his role as an intermediary in the production of fine prints, with his name appearing frequently alongside works by the prominent printmakers of his time, marking his technical contribution to translating original artworks into engraved reproductions. Born at Varallo Sesia in Piedmont, he began his training under the painter Vittorio Avondo. He continued his studies at the Academies of Milan and Turin, overcoming financial difficulties to become one of the top pupils of his class. A prolific artist, his notable works include drawings for the numismatic history of the Savoy rulers and illustrations published in La Reale Galleria di Torino illustrata in 1836. In 1842 Metalli was appointed honorary professor at the Academy of Turin, where he continued his work until his death. | ||||||||||
