Nicolaes van Lijnhoven (c. 1610–bef. 1702)

Born in Haarlem, Van Lijnhoven was a printmaker and draughtsman active in Haarlem and Paris, whose modest yet distinctive output reflects the stylistic trends of mid-17th-century Dutch art. Little is known about him, and only a small number of his works have survived. His pen-and-ink drawings often depict riders, soldiers, and rustic landscapes, displaying a clear influence from Philips Wouwerman in their dynamic composition and atmospheric detail, marked by a sharp, energetic style, occasionally humorous, and at times vulgar. He also produced engravings based on designs by artists such as Andries Both and Pieter Fransz de Grebber, contributing to the visual dissemination of genre scenes and camp life, including a series of farmers and peasants. Van Lijnhoven's death is recorded as having occurred before 1702.
