Spinning Woman
Oil on canvas, 32 x 23 cm, by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, c. 1808
Location unknown

Set against a backdrop of greenish-grey, a woman is depicted in full stature, clad in a multicoloured costume. The attire comprises a white bodice adorned with large red trimmings, complemented by short, dark-coloured half sleeves. A matching skirt is overlaid with a knee-length white serrated apron. The woman holds a spindle and a distaff in her hands, denoting her peasant status. In this piece, parallels can be drawn between Ingres and Corot, not only in subject matter but also in their shared approach of confidently capturing cool tones through careful observation.
