Ornamental violin with two scenes of violinists
Faience, anonymous (Delft), h. 63 x w. 23 x d. 10 cm
c. 17051710, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

This earthenware violin cannot be played. It is an
ornamental object. When the violin was bought by the
collector John Loudon in 1876 for a record price of 1500
guilders, it was considered the absolute pinnacle of the
production of Delft earthenware. The modelling and
paintings make this an exceptional object.
