A Pulpit in the Cathedral,
Salerno Watercolour, by William Wiehe Collins (1862–1951)
Salerno cathedral's most interesting things include the two ambones,
or pulpits. The one appearing in the painting is a wonderful example
of the work of John of Procida. The other, as well as the
archbishop’s throne, is by the same great designer. All three
are masterpieces of the Greco-Byzantine style of inlaid tesserae.
In the painting can be seen a fine Paschal candelabrum, with most
intricate inlay. These pulpits are approached by steps from inside
the choir.
