Black satin corset with yellow lining
Satin, silk, cotton, embroidery, metal; 26 cm, length, c. 1900, French or
Dutch
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam
Mrs Van Eeghen-du Mée, the wearer of this corset, was a rich and
fashionable woman from Amsterdam, known for her extensive wardrobe,
which included numerous Parisian designs. The origins of this striking
corset remain uncertain due to the absence of a label, making it
impossible to determine whether she acquired it in Paris, a renowned
centre of haute couture, or in Amsterdam, where luxury fashion was also
readily available. However, from 1889 onwards, she had the option of
purchasing 'French Corsets' from Hunkemöller Lexis, a distinguished
establishment that had positioned itself as a 'Corsetten-Magazijn' at
Leidsestraat 103. This suggests that high-quality French-style corsets
were accessible in Amsterdam, allowing fashionable women like Mrs Van
Eeghen-du Mée to keep up with Parisian trends without necessarily
travelling abroad.
