Pieter Brueghel the Younger (1564–1638) Pieter Brueghel, 'the younger,'
called 'Hell Brueghel' from the frightful and eccentric subjects he
painted. Of the Flemish school, he was born at Brussels, and studied
under Gillis van Coninxloo at Antwerp. As a painter he was much influenced
by the works of his father, the elder painter of the same name, whose
predilection for ghostly and diabolical subjects he inherited, but he
was considered inferior to him, particularly in invention, colouring,
and technical merit. His critics generally considered that there was
not much in the subjects of his pictures to recommend them to one’s
notice. He was registered as a master at Antwerp in 1585, and later
died there. |
