Karl Joseph Brodtmann (1787–1862)

Born in Überlingen, Germany, Brodtmann was a lithographer, illustrator, printer, and bookseller. He moved to Zurich in 1817 and, from 1820, he ran lithographic businesses and bookshops. He was renown for his illustrations of natural and zoological subjects, and historical works, views and portraits. His illustrations of animals were in particular praised for their detail, accuracy, and beauty. He published his own works as well as those of other illustrators. He died in Basel.
