A Fantastic Creature
Pen and brown ink, brown wash, over black chalk, by Arent van Bolten.
Late 16th century-early 17th century
The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Arent van Bolten's grotesque pictures are a fascinating window into
the artistic imagination of the early 17th century. His fantastical
creatures, hybrid figures, and bizarre creations are often a mix of
human, animal, and plant elements, with exaggerated features and
contorted limbs. Some resemble mythical beasts, while others seem
like figments of a fevered dream. The overall effect is one of both
humour and unease, as the viewer is left to wonder at the meaning
behind these strange forms. But his grotesques were not simply meant
to shock or amuse. They often served as social commentary,
lampooning the excesses and follies of his time.
