The Marchese Capponi's
Outlandish Cauliflower Stalk
Oil on canvas, 86.3 x 115.8 cm, by Bartolomeo Bimbi, 1707
Museo di Storia Naturale, Villa Medicea di Poggio a Caiano, Prato,
Tuscany
The painting Stravagante piede di cavolfiore del marchese Capponi
is part of a series commissioned by Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici,
who requested Bimbi to depict various rare and exotic plants from
the Medici family's collection. It portrays a cauliflower plant with
an anomalous, bizarre, and grotesque shape. A cartouche explains that the
plant was grown by the Marchese Capponi, who presented it to the Grand
Duke in 1706. In this context, the plant can be interpreted as a symbol
of the vanity and fragility of nature, as well as a metaphor for the
complexity and unpredictability of life. Bimbi was renowned for his
botanical still lifes, carefully capturing the intricate details of
plants and flowers. His works serve as valuable historical records
of the flora of his time.
