Jacques de Bie (1581–1640) De Bie (or de Bye), a Flemish
engraver, draughtsman, art dealer and numismatist, was born at Antwerp.
There, he was an apprentice in the Guild of St Luke from 1594 (he became
master in 1607) as a pupil of Adrian Collaert. He worked wholly with
the engraver; his execution is neat and firm, and his drawing tolerably
correct. Collaert's influence is quite evident from the style of his
plates. In conjunction with Collaerts, he engraved some of the set of
fifty plates of the Life, Passion, and Resurrection of Christ,
after the designs of Martin de Vos. Several of the plates in the Life
of the Virgin, from the designs of the same painter, were executed
by this artist, together with Philip and Theodor Galle. De Bie was active
in Antwerp, Brussels, Arnhem and Paris. He died at Paris. |
