The Mexican antiquarian and historian Dionisio Abadiano is noted for
his contributions to the study and preservation of Mesoamerican heritage.
Among his notable achievements was the creation of a plaster cast
of the Aztec calendar stone. This cast became a valuable tool for
study and education in the 19th century, enabling scholars outside
Mexico to analyse the stone’s iconography and interpret its
significance within Aztec cosmology. At a time when transporting the
original was impossible, the cast offered a practical solution for
exhibitions and academic purposes, increasing global interest in Mesoamerican
archaeology and history.
