Albumen print, anonymous, 1889
J.P. Getty Museum, Los Angeles, CA

The Mexican antiquarian and historian Dionisio Abadiano is noted for his contributions to the study and preservation of Mesoamerican heritage. Among his notable achievements was the creation of a plaster cast of the Aztec calendar stone. This cast became a valuable tool for study and education in the 19th century, enabling scholars outside Mexico to analyse the stone’s iconography and interpret its significance within Aztec cosmology. At a time when transporting the original was impossible, the cast offered a practical solution for exhibitions and academic purposes, increasing global interest in Mesoamerican archaeology and history.
