Celebrations from the imagination: Mexico's Día de la Bandera
Flag Day in Mexico, celebrated on the 24th of February, is a day dedicated
to honouring one of the country’s most important national symbols: the
Mexican flag. The flag, with its green, white, and red stripes and the
emblem of an eagle perched on a cactus devouring a serpent, holds deep
historical and cultural significance. Each element of the flag represents
a core value of the nation—green for hope and prosperity, white for
unity and peace, and red for the blood of the heroes who fought for
independence. The central emblem is inspired by the Aztec legend of
the founding of Tenochtitlán, modern-day Mexico City, symbolising the
country’s deep indigenous roots and heritage. The current version of
the flag was officially adopted on the 16th of September 1968, though
the core elements had been in use since the 19th century. This celebration
is marked by ceremonies, parades, and displays of patriotism across
the country, reminding everyone of the pride and history embedded in
the flag's design. It's a day to reflect on national heritage and celebrate
Mexican culture.
