Taj
Majal
Watercolour, 51.1 x 67.1 cm, anonymous, 19th century
Wellcome Collection, London
Although the painter of this work is unknown, it has been concluded
that it was executed by an Indian artist, possibly between 1800 and
1899. The Taj Mahal, a white marble tomb in Agra, was built by Shah
Jahan, the grief-stricken Mughal emperor, for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal,
in the 17th-century. It remains an important landmark to India, and
a testament to love, and a bygone era.
