Palacio Salvo in Montevideo was designed by the Italian architect
Mario Palanti. Construction began in 1922 and was completed in 1928.
At the time of its completion, it was the tallest building in South
America, standing at a height of 100 meters (330 feet). It is situated
at the intersection of Plaza Independencia and Avenida 18 de Julio,
two of the city's main thoroughfares. Its design is eclectic, featuring
a mix of architectural styles, including Art Deco, Art Nouveau, and
neo-Gothic influences. The building is composed of commercial spaces
on the lower floors, while the upper floors contain residential apartments.
The crown of the building, which was originally intended to be a lighthouse
but is now used as an observation deck, offers panoramic views of
the city and the coastline. Palacio Salvo has become a symbol of Montevideo
and is considered one of the city's most important landmarks. It has
been designated as a National Heritage Site.
