A cherub
carving in Bogotá's Primate Cathedral Photograph by M.O.G.G., 2006
One of the carved wooden cherubs adorning the interior of the
Primate Cathedral of Bogotá in Colombia. The cherub, with its finely
detailed face and gilded wings, reflects the baroque aesthetic that
dominated ecclesiastical art in Latin America during the 17th and
18th centuries. Built between 1807 and 1823 on the site of earlier
churches, the cathedral embodies neoclassical architectural design,
but retains elements of baroque artistic traditions, particularly in
its ornamentation. The use of vibrant colours, such as the deep red
backdrop, and intricate gold embellishments are characteristic of
the Spanish colonial influence, blended with local artistic
traditions.
